Abstract

This article compares two criminal organizations with the aim of shedding light on why while the first, the Sinaloa Cartel, remains a hegemonic organization, the second, the Gulf Cartel-Zetas, is currently a weakened and fragmented organization. The two cases are compared by tracing some of the mechanisms involved in each outcome. Specifically, two dimensions that take a different course in each organization are compared: 1) the interaction with the federal government; and 2) the dilemmas associated with leadership. Static game theory is used to clarify the logic of each of these processes by modeling the behavior of the actors analyzed.
