Abstract

This study aims to investigate whether Mexican students in the final year of high school exhibit disparate sensitivity to academic performance to define their educational expectations, depending on their socioeconomic background. The PLANEA 2017 assessment is employed to estimate logistic models of educational expectations. It is observed that the expectations of pursuing at least a bachelor's degree are slightly less sensitive to school performance in the high socioeconomic strata than in the low strata. This may be due to the greater role that education plays in the social reproduction of the former. In the expectations of pursuing a postgraduate degree, a lower sensitivity to performance was observed in the lower strata, which could indicate greater caution when defining ambitious expectations.
