Abstract

This paper aims to identify mechanisms that explain the relationship between the socioeconomic background and the educational expectations of students in the last year of upper secondary in Mexico. The analytical approach is based on the theory of primary and secondary effects on educational inequality, as well as on the influence of the structure of the educational system. The factors analyzed are: 1) student’s learning in mathematics; 2) student’s average grades in upper secondary; 3) student’s expected income in case of finishing university; 4) student’s employment status; and 5) student’s type of upper secondary school. Results show that these factors explain around 30% of the effect of social background on educational expectations.
