Resumen

Virtually all forms of cultural expression, from painting to music, cinema and sculpture, have engaged in multiple ways with the world of the night. Versions of the “nocturne” have emerged at different points to identify artistic practices in which the night functions as a deeply-rooted sensibility rather than merely a theme or setting. This article looks at versions of the cultural and artistic “nocturne” as they have evolved over the last several centuries. Insofar as versions of the “nocturne” presume some form of adequation between experiences of the night and the forms or styles through which it is captured in discourse they return us to many of the fundamental questions in the analysis of cultural artefacts.
