Abstract

The review highlights that Nelson Arteaga Botello’s book, Civil Sphere and the Semantics of Political Dispute, offers a deep analysis of Mexican politics through the lens of cultural sociology. The author conceptualizes the civil sphere in Mexico as a space of constant contestation, shaped by cultural codes, power relations, and historical practices such as patrimonialism and populism. Across five chapters, the book connects contemporary social theory—particularly influenced by thinkers like Jeffrey Alexander—with specific Mexican cases, showing how clientelist practices and corporatist structures undermine the autonomy and effectiveness of civil society as a counterbalance to state power.

The work is viewed as a significant contribution to contemporary social theory, expanding the analytical reach to phenomena like populism, clientelism, and social resistance. However, the review also points out two major shortcomings: a methodological issue regarding the selection and justification of case studies, and a theoretical limitation in the treatment of populism, which leans toward a predominantly negative interpretation without exploring more balanced or alternative perspectives.

In conclusion, the book is presented as both an innovative analytical tool for understanding power dynamics in Mexico and a theoretical proposal—despite its limitations—that encourages a rethinking of the relationship between civil society and the state, especially in contexts marked by democratic challenges and high social conflict.
